Forest Stewardship Subcommitee
The forests of the Swan Valley are among the most diverse and productive in Montana. As such, they play a vital role in sustaining the Valley’s communities and ecosystems. The Forest Stewardship Subcommittee brings public and private land owners and managers together to ensure that the forests of the Swan Valley continue to support a local wood products industry, healthy wildlife populations, diverse native plant communities and ample recreational opportunities. The group looks to enhance community involvement in public forestland management and encourages the use of local contractors in public and private forest stewardship projects whenever possible.
Forest Stewardship on Private Lands
Swan Ecosystem Center provides small grants to help private landowners develop and implement long-term forest restoration and conservation plans and reduce forest fuels around homes, while also realizing some economic gain. These plans are designed to help landowners better understand the natural resource value and ecological function of their property, and to guide them and the contractors they hire when completing specific management actions.
Forest Stewardship on Public Lands
Swan Ecosystem Center offers field tours and public meetings to improve understanding among land management agencies and the public about Forest Service and State timber sales in the Swan Valley. When a diverse group of citizens is involved at the early stages of land management planning and the agencies and citizens are receptive to information and new ideas, better land management can be the result.
