David Cronenwett, David Cronenwett will offer an all day course on wilderness survival techniques. David has studied primitive living and wilderness skills as student and staff at Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS) in Boulder, Utah and with master woodsman Mors Lochanski in Alberta, Canada. He has also led seminars in outdoor survival for the University of Montana, the Montana Discovery Foundation and other organizations throughout the region. He is a seasonal naturalist at the Pine Butte Guest Ranch in Choteau, Montana where he resides when not traveling with his work in wilderness survival.
His presentation will include survival psychology and strategies, the thermodynamics of heat loss/dressing for cold, fire building, tools, shelters, knife sharpening, signal fires and more. The entire class will be outdoors from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 11th of February, location to be announced. The fee for this class is $50 per person. If survival of the bull trout in the Swan is of interest to you please note: on February 16th, Leo Rosenthal, fisheries biologist with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Region 1, Kalispell, will present a summary of the lake trout netting program. The presentation will be held at the U.S. Forest Service Condon Work Center from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Efforts have continued during 2011 to lessen the impact of lake trout on bull trout in Swan Lake. Biologist are continue to track the numbers of bull trout in the Swan River as well. Leo has been in charge of these efforts and will present an update on this work. In addition Leo will discuss information on fish habitat, regulations and future plans to maintain and protect fishing in Region 1.
A power point of the bull trout research project and what happens to all the netted fish is a component of the presentation. John Vore and Chuck Bartos for MT FWP in Region One, Kalispell, will provide data on the past year’s deer and elk population and the 2011 hunting season statistics. There is no fee, but donations are appreciated and will go to SEC’s education program. Sign up deadline is March 2.

A panel of local and state water quality specialists will discuss Swan Valley ground water quality as related to Montana law specifically regarding residential development and fish habitat. Bob Keane, research ecologist, USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station, will provide background and updated information about our famous high altitude pine. There is no fee, but donations are appreciated and will go to SEC’s education program. Sign up deadline is April 27.
A component of the annual Loon and Fish Festival is a walk to Holland Falls for a view of mountains and flowers that is unsurpassed. Details will be announced in early spring. There is no fee or sign up deadline.
