Native Plants

The Swan Valley is home to a rich diversity of native plant life. Hundreds of plants are indigenous to the area and are adapted to our forest ecosystem. But individual species have distinct requirements for soil, sun, shade, proximity to water, and altitude. If a healthy component of native plants is growing nearby, and your weed infestation is light, encouraging the natives to re-colonize after treatment may be all that is needed. Taking note of the natives growing nearby and encouraging their spread will contribute to a successful revegetation plan.

If your weed infestation is widespread, reseeding or planting with natives or other desirable plants will be necessary to keep weeds from re-establishing themselves. There are several native plant nurseries in the region that can provide plants and assistance. For help in finding a nursery or selecting appropriate plants for revegetating your site, contact Swan Ecosystem Center, (406) 754-3137.
