Updates, Options and Opportunities Regarding Loons

On Saturday, July 31 at Holland Lake Beach, Chris Hammond of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Region 1, Kalispell, will update participants on the current status and management of this unique bird. Also of interest will be the discussion of opportunities to volunteer to assist with loon surveys.

A native of Whitefish, Chris has conducted research on loons as an undergraduate and graduate student and helped with the revision of the Common Loon Management Plan for Montana. His presentation will provide new information on territorial behavior of loons, the population dynamics of Montana's loons versus loons in other parts of the United States, as well as basic natural history and conservation of the species. As Chris explained, "although common loons are doing well globally, in Montana they are considered 'at risk' and 'sensitive' with the breeding population confined mostly to northwest Montana."

The program begins at 7:00 p.m. Bring a chair and insect repellent. For more information, call Swan Ecosystem Center (406) 754-3137.
